The Suitcase Project is a long-term analogue photography project by and for refugees and displaced people across Europe and around the world.
A suitcase, containing a camera, a roll of film and a diary, passes from person to person. Each temporary owner of the suitcase takes photographs and writes in the diary, before passing it on.
In a world where new crises continuously dominate headlines, often overshadowing past events, this project leverages traditional 35mm film and paper journals to encourage a slower, more contemplative reflection on past and ongoing stories.
The project also transforms the subjects of news reporting - those who leave their homes, fleeing war or violence or seeking better lives - into the storytellers themselves, sharing their experiences and expressing what "home" means to them now.
Nottingham Photo Social - 2nd April - 6pm til 8pm
Our photo socials are open to everyone and are absolutely free. This is a friendly event for anyone who wants to share their work or meet other people from the Nottingham photography community.
We encourage people attending the social to bring some of their pictures and bodies of work to share with the group however, don't feel like you HAVE to bring anything, you can just join in and support others. The social is an opportunity to meet new people and enjoy working with your peers, Everyone is welcome.
We have a few basic fundamental approaches in the social that we try to stick to to ensure we have a welcoming and inclusive environment...
Be Kind
This isn't a place for harsh critique (although we can provide that in a 1-2-1 if you wish), this is a place where we support one another and encourage your practice in a constructive and kind way.
Print only
We want to encourage you to print your work. It doesn't have to be anything expensive and we're happy to help with printing with some notice. We do this so that we can see work laid out on a table. This helps you see your work as a whole an ecourages your peers to interact with it.
No gear talk
We try to dissuade gear chat and encourage you to talk about your work and not the tools you used to make it. We all love chatting about gear on occasion but we want to use the social to develop your practice, not your camera collection!
If you want to come please grab a free ticket so we can monitor numbers. All are welcome and it's absolutely FREE!
